What is a Traditional Martial Art?

A traditional martial art is any form of antagonistic personal combat that is taught as a system, utilizing a scientific pedagogical approach. This includes a specific methodology along with its artistic expression through a regimen of physical training and mental discipline. It is a science because the techniques can be executed and repeated achieving the same results. It is also an art because these techniques can be expressed artistically, using ones body as a medium in a highly controlled manner that is directed by conscious thought.

The above-mentioned definition, considerations and criteria absolutely applies to “Traditional Fencing”. As this body of knowledge must be handed down from master to disciple through successive generations. Furthermore, any particular form of traditional fencing must be handed down unadulterated through a continuing and surviving lineage ensuring an unbroken chain of transmission. This lineage from master to student is critically important.
